Why heavy bullets are better for larger game when using lighter calibers.

Heavy for caliber bullets possess a higher Sectional Density (SD) than lighter bullets.  SD stems from a complex formula involving a bullet’s weight in relation to its cross sectional area.  The higher the SD, the greater the capabilities that bullet has for penetration.  Heavier bullets have higher SD’s than lighter bullets of the same caliber.  Therefore, when using lighter calibers on game, heavier bullets will penetrate deeper than lighter bullets. Additionally, lighter bullets will be traveling faster upon impact and consequently, cause the bullet to expand faster and not penetrate as deep.  When comparing this model to a skydiver’s parachute, the faster the skydiver is traveling, the faster their parachute opens to slow them down.
